When VS Achuthanandan, a resolute fighter against corruption, became the chief minister of Kerala, I expected a lot. Though he was projected as a man against industrial development, he did prove his critics wrong when he made a few initiative in the direction of IT revolution in the state.
I thought he, being a crusader against corruption, will do well as a chief minister. However, I am now as shocked as any Keralaite, who believed in him. A man known for his integrity has become totally silent. I am sure he was silenced within the party. But he could have risen above the party and did a lot for his people. But he did not. Instead, I think he has decided to hang on to his chair by being silent.
Is there anything happening in Kerala other than the bandhs, strike and hartals? Take a look at the other states. They are not indulged in rhetoric. The politicians in those states might be shrewd and corrupted, but they do a lot for the people. I find this is one opportunity when even a staunch fighter against corruption like me starts supporting it at least for the better lives of people.
I think our leaders in Kerala are like "pattiyottu thinnukayumilla, mattareykondu theettikkukayum illa". (The dog won't eat anything, but it won't let other eat the same.) Do something for us? We expect a lot from you.
